Ren Fest ‘09

I want to go to the Renaissance Faire. I miss it. Not a lot of subtlety in this post. Not at all.

Last year, I was quite excited about going to the Faire, here in Washington, since it was actually quite close. Sadly, the 2008 Faire was cancelled. I’m still not quite sure of the reasons, but I think it had something to do with getting permits for land and water use, or something like that. The long and the short of it is that it was supposed to be in Gig Harbor, and it didn’t happen. This year, it is located in a different place (Maris Farms in Buckley, WA). Although I have no idea how to get there, Google Maps says that it’s not hard at all! That fills me with comfort.

Akismet, how I love thee….

Okay. Technical jargon.

SPAM = Unsolicited comments, e-mail, junk-mail, or other commercial advertisements (just a side note, but every commercial on TV fits this category, too).

HAM = Desired e-mail, comments, ads.

False Positive = Something that is HAM but gets marked as SPAM.

Akismet = AWESOME! This is an amazing tool/service that helps compare incoming comments against a complex algorithm to determine if the comment should be allowed or not. Here are the SPAM stats for my site:

I know it’s not totally exciting to most of my readers, but I’m totally psyched about this!

Dinner with Paul and Family

Paul and family are in town for a little mini-vacation, and Julie and I went out to dinner with them. We all had a wonderful time! The food was good (Cheesecake Factory), but we all ate so much, no one got dessert.
After dinner, we walked around Bellevue Square Mall. Paul, the boys and I went to the Apple Store and then to the Lego store. Julie and Arlene took a more sedate pace and wandered around, meeting up with us.
After looking in some of the stores, I took Matt and Tom (David is at camp) outside to compete in a Ninja Warrior Challenge. The first stage was to navigate the benches that had been overgrown. I’m glad to say that both boys made it around!
Here are some various pictures from the evening, in reverse chronological order:

iBlogger isn’t updated yet…

So, here I am playing with my new iPhone 3.0 software and one of the things I love the most is the landscape mode for e-mail and text messages. I can’t wait until all the apps I use (yeah, iBlogger and Tweetie, I’m looking at YOU) have that option. I can type MUCH faster with the wider layout and with much more confidence.

Other than that, I haven’t noticed too many differences. I like the search features, but I haven’t used anything very heavily yet. Only time will tell!

My trip to Trader Joe’s

So, today Julie and I were out and I decided that it was a good time to stop by Trader Joe’s and see what it’s all about. It was VERY crowded and all of the people who were shopping there seemed to be in a really bad mood. A couple of times we got nasty looks when we didn’t move out of some old lady’s way quickly enough, or when we wanted to look at an item on the shelf. I really liked the place because it felt like a small corner, or neighborhood store. My official breakdown is thus:

Pros:

  • They really had a nice selection of cheaper wines. I got several bottles, pictures of which are posted below.
  • They had a large selection of nuts, dried fruits and other snacky things.
  • It looked like they had a good selection of a variety of organic, natural and local products.

Cons:

  • It was crowded and difficult to actually look at anything on the shelves.
  • It smelled funny. Like not “ha ha” funny, but “ewwww” funny.
  • Apparently a large number of items are “seasonal”, including the bread yeast I was looking for (as in, they no-got-ski)

All in all, it was a nice little trip and I think I’m going to try to go shopping there again when I don’t think they will be nearly as busy. Now, it’s time for the pictures!
