Last night was AWESOME!

Last night was a wonderful evening! Julie and I have been spending time with some of our friends and one weekend, Julie and Julie promised Julie’s daughter that they could come by and meet the cats (ok, that was a complicated sentence, but there are two Julies in this story). They got to the apartment, but Julie had left her keys behind when we met the others for dinner, and since I was at Fry’s with Sean, they couldn’t get into the house. Julie’s daughter, Sydney, was quite distraught and VERY unhappy with the situation, so there were promises all around about coming over to meet the cats at a later date.

This weekend, we had Julie, Sean, and Sydney over for dinner and to meet the kittens! The grumpy cats were doped up, so this was going to be a great time! The folks showed up at 4:00PM and we spent the afternoon and evening playing with the cats, grilling on my miniGrill, and watching a couple of movies (well, the movies were on, but no one was paying attention to them). After dinner, a couple of us popped out a board game and introduced Sydney to gaming.

The evening ended up with Sydney pushing Lucky a bit too much and getting snapped at. No one was bitten, but Sydney was quite upset. She was VERY tired, so once she calmed down, she said “good night” to the kittens and went home.

I wasn’t all hot about having people over because out apartment is just really small. It wasn’t so bad because we are all close friends and we have a clean floor to hang out on, but I still can’t wait to have an actual house. I like having people over, but ever since I moved in here, it’s been my one sanctuary. There are few people who I am willing to invite in, but that’s always the way I’ve been.

So, Sean and Julie, if you read this, thank you so much for visiting and I can’t wait until we can do it again!

Xcode and Online Tutorials

So, I have to say that I was silly again! I’ve been wanting to learn how to develop on my iPad, and I thought that I would install the tools, and dive in, using some tutorials that I would scrounge from the Internetz. After doing this for a bit, I’ve decided that I would rather take a more deliberate approach.

I started off with a couple of tutorials on making some iPhone apps that want to introduce the new programmer into the exciting world of the iPhone SDK. Sadly, it’s easy to see why most of these people ask for donations for their work, rather than writing a book and charging for it (: The other end of the spectrum are the authors who assume that you are a skilled developer with some mad-Objective-C skillz already under your hat. Bouncing between the two extremes has left me with a desire to actually do things right!

I’ve been looking around Amazon and I’ve found a couple of books that look interesting to me, but I think I’ll start off with something on Objective-C on the Mac. Most of those books will cover a lot of the programming skills that I learned with C, C++, and Java (all quite rusty skills, I have to admit), while detailing the specifics of a different language, so I’ll be able to make sure I don’t end up trying to re-invent the wheel to build my apps.

Speaking of apps, this is the first time I’ve really dug into programming with a specific goal in mind. I have the idea for two applications that I would really like to write. Nothing that I am actually interested in selling or marketing or turning into the next Facebook (ARGH!!!), but they are a goal, and I think that with that goal, I’ll be able focus on the end result instead of the process.

With that in mind, I’m going to head out to the book store today and actually put my hands on some beginner’s guides. If I don’t find anything (well, honestly, even if I do), I have two picked out from Amazon’s Kindle Store to download onto my iPad and learn from there. This is turning into an Apple household!

My cats on dope…

I’ve been worried about my two older cats and the impending purchase of a house and the subsequent moving experience. This time, I resolved to consult a vet and see if I could do something more than just prepare a nice “cat room” and all that jazz. I took them to the doctor, and had a consult about that and about the two older cat’s behaviour ever since I moved to this area. After explaining some options, I decided to try them out on some pills, and I posted that to Facebook. A couple of people asked me questions about where I got them and did I go to the vet. This is the response to them:

I did take them to the doctor. Both of them really changed their personalities when I moved to this area and I have been unhappy about that for two years now. About 8 or 9 months ago Lucky started to lick all the fur off of her belly. When I took her in, the doctor said that it was probably anxiety since there wasn’t any blockage and she was well See Morehydrated. I tried some of the non-medical suggestions, but for this trip to the vet, she had more fur gone.

I’ve started the two older cats on a half-pill a day, and I have another follow up appointment on Monday. I can say that after this one half-pill, both cats are back to their pre-move selves, more than two years later. Lucky is playful and alert, and hasn’t swiped at the other two cats in anger, and George is bold and affectionate. My cats are my children, so I’m not ashamed to say that I have been getting choked up watching Lucky play like she did those years ago, and as George seeks me out to snuggle.

I would prefer not to have them on medication for a long-term solution, but I really wanted a trial for when we move to a new house. I am more worried about that trauma since I don’t want them to become MORE anxious, but if they handle things this well for the next 3 or 4 days (all I’m putting them on right now), I might talk to the vet about a long-term dosage.

Gracie is shocked and surprised, now that everyone wants to play, so I’ve had to make sure to give her extra attention; I don’t want her feeling left out!!!

iPad and iPad Two

So, back when the iPad came out, I had already committed myself to getting one. I’ve been without an Apple product for too long, and I was ready to buy into whatever they were offering. When the iPad was announced, I was very excited, because it really engendered everything that I’ve been wanting in a device. Without going into the long rambling explanation, I’ll just say that I wanted it as a media consumption device.

When I bought it, the first day it came out, I was quite excited! Now that I’ve been using it for a full month and a couple of days, I’m still excited. I’ve used it pretty much how I envisioned that I would, but there are some things that have changed. Now that we got Julie one as well, I’m helping her fit it into her daily routine.

I’ll start off by saying that most of the hours I’ve put into using it have been as an ebook reader. I’ve read 5 full length books on the Amazon Kindle app and I’ve been quite pleased with the quality of the experience. I’ve been somewhat underwhelmed with the quality of the ebooks, just as I complained about the quality of in-print books. One book had page numbers scattered in the text and didn’t have the correct formatting for every paragraph (painful when reading conversations when both speakers are lumped into one line of text). The other books have had all sorts of random artifacts, such as words that would have been split when in print, still have a space in the middle of the word, or footnotes are several page flips away from the actual notification. I am honestly not happy with paying $9 for a book that is of this poor quality. I had the same feeling about in-print books, and that was what fueled my desire for some ebooks. I thought that without the print process, maybe the editors wouldn’t screw up as much. I was sadly mistaken. I’ll continue to read ebooks, but I’ll gripe about paying so much for low quality media, simply because there isn’t another game in town.

The second thing that I want to mention is that one of the things that I had thought I would be doing is watching more video, streaming or loaded. Because of that, I picked out the 64GB version of the iPad, thinking that I could load a bunch of TV, movies and music. Well, now that I’ve been using it, frequently, I have to say that I’ve watched almost no video on it. During the first week, I played with it, but what I found was that in the living room, with my laptop, I was less likely to watch the iPad than just toss a video on my second monitor while I played WoW or web surfed. The second big point that I noticed was that without headphones, watching video can really annoy a spouse. With that in mind, I have a master plan! I’ve been looking at getting a nice set of Bluetooth headphones to use with both my iPad and my phone. When Julie and I get a house, I’m not going to have my nerd-nest set up in the living room, so I want a way to continue my normal activities of surfing and videoing while Julie watches CSI or something like that.

My third thought is that I don’t miss flash at all. Streaming video is something that annoys me on news pages, and I don’t spend hours browsing youTube (there’s an app for that, anyway), so really, there is nothing that I’m missing out on. Maybe I’m the only person on the Internet that doesn’t think video is the coolest thing since sliced bread, but I would rather read my news than listen to it (I do love my NPR and BBC news apps). Yeah, I can’t watch some porn sites on my iPad, but then again, I don’t watch them on my computer, either, so no big loss (:

The final mention is about Julie and how she’s been using her iPad. We’ve only had it for a couple of days, but she’s already purchased a bunch of country music (bleh) and used it to listen to music while in the shower (I do that, too). Right now, she’s still more likely to have her laptop out in the living room, but I think once she gets comfortable with the lighter iPad, she’ll want to use it more and more for as much as she can. It won’t replace anything, but it will be a nice addition to use for those light tasks.

Over all, I’ve had a very positive experience, and I think the purchase was totally worth it. As I’ve said before, no one really NEEDS an iPad, but if you have one, you’ll find that it easily slides into your life and you will find uses for it. Good job, Apple!

The Romance of the Programmer

For quite a while now, honestly as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be a programmer. I wanted to sit down in front of a computer and slam out some code. Swilling Mountain Dew and peering at the computer screen for hours while I poured my artistic and logical talents into lines of phosphorescent genius.

I’ve attempted to learn to code, and in fact, I can do a passable job at basic coding tasks. I’ve taken classes in C, C++ and Java and while I understand many of the principles, much of the thinking is opaque to me.

When I take up some hobbies, I have an almost instinctual understanding of many of the “first principles” that govern the hobby. When I took up martial arts, while no genius, I was able to progress rapidly because I had the ability to understand the movement at a deep level. I was not perfect, but my brain spoke the language of the movement well enough that I could easily internalize the lessons. With cooking, I understand how heating or cooling things influences the molecular structure of foods. I understand how those foods interact with the biological receptors of our bodies to make them taste or smell good. When programming, however, I feel like a clumsy giant who is trying to string together pearls.

I’m going to continue to attempt to program! I haven’t given up on the idea! My latest pipe-dream is to work on building an application for my iPad. I have an idea. I’ve fleshed it out with a set of basic features, and I’ve even sketched out some basic UI. What I need now is the ability to turn that idea into a working app, but that will take time and a lot of learning! Objective-C, Cocoa, iPhone SDK, xCode tools. The list goes on and on, but once again, I’ve got the bug!
